The Stately Homes

greenwood plantation

"Stately home" describes the classic Southern plantation house.  Usually in built in the Greek Revival or Italianate style, these homes were rural mansions set in vast expanses of land.  They were built to impress from a distance and to be the architectural embodiment of the owner's wealth.  While these homes often incorporate elements that ease the difficulties caused by weather and location, they are not as heat and water-friendly as the Creole/Caribbean homes built in the same areas.  Most of the stately homes feature galleries, but they are much taller to accommodate multi-storey columns.  And the homes are not raised, or if they are, the piers are disguised so that the house sits solidly on the gound.
