Timeline

  • Donation was recorded in June 2008
  • Notice to proceed was received Monday, August 15, 2011
  • Contract allows 425 days for construction
  • Expected time to complete is September 28, 2012
  • Thanks to the 2008 “Roll Forward” of the Library’s  11.1 Mills, 10-year Dedicated Property Tax, this building will be completed years ahead of schedule

Design Development Presentation

  • 15,800 square feet total
  • Dedicated spaces for children, teens, and adults
  • Will house books, AV materials, and periodicals for all ages
  • Approximately 40 public computers for all ages, 10 laptops for free computer classes, and a number of online public library catalogs, plus free Wi-Fi
  • 2 AWE Early Literacy Workstations for young children
  • Drive-thru window for book drop off and pickup
  • Self-checkout machine as well as full service checkout
  • Public Meeting Rooms
  • Collaborative Study Rooms
  • Quiet Reading Room
 

Funding

  • Site of old Fairwood Country Club—over the tennis court
  • Land donated by David Todd Waguespack and Kelly C. Sills, representing Kodiak Equipment, L.L. C.  
  • The June 2008 Act of Donation records the 2.65 acre tract of land with a value of $808,038.00
  • Cost of Construction bid came in at $4,471,000
  • The City-Parish is the owner; the Library is the user
  • Department of Public Works staff will work with the Architect and the General Contractor to oversee the project
  • Funds for this Pay-As-You-Go project were amassed by the East Baton Rouge Parish Library over time, as part of its 10-year Dedicated Property Tax
