Literacy Facts

The literacy level of the mother can indicate a child's future academic success.

Children with parents in school or training are less likely to drop out themselves.

In 2008, roughly 2000 area high school students dropped out.

Teens who don't finish high school contribute to Louisiana's shortage of skilled workers.

Up to one fifth of Louisiana's adults functions at the lowest level of literacy.

Literacy Providers

tutoring These local agencies provide literacy services to all ages.

 

  • Adult Literacy Advocates
    Providess basic education classes and one on one tutoring, alternative high school diploma program, work place literacy, English as a second language and Graduate Exit Exam review course.
  • Christ's Way Academy
    Provides free one-on-one tutoring for teenagers and adults who have the desire to improve their reading and writing skills. Also conduct small group tutoring sessions for students who are seeking to acquire a GED diploma.
  • Family Values Resource Institute
    Works to move economically and socially challenged individuals into sustaining a self-sufficient life style by addressing the educational, economical, and emotional barriers faced by citizens in the Greater Baton Rouge area.
  • St. Paul Adult Learning Center
    GED classes, refresher studies, life skills, job skills and art education.
  • YWCA Center for Family Empowerment
    On-site educational services for families with children six weeks to five years; adults attend parenting, education, and literacy courses while children are in the Child Development Center.
