Self-Publish Through the Library: Indie Author Project

SELF-e is a self-publishing option for local authors who wish to gain exposure and add their ebooks to the library.

Connecting Indie Authors, Libraries and Readers

Welcome! Your library has made the SELF-e submission platform freely available to its patrons and local writing community. By submitting your indie-published book here, you can share your ebook(s) with patrons of your local library and libraries throughout your state or region.

When you submit your ebook for inclusion in your regional collection, your book is also eligible for inclusion in the SELF-e Select collections. These genre-based curated collections feature all of the best indie reads submitted to the SELF-e program, as selected by Library Journal, and are available in any subscribing library regardless of location. This free service is available to all indie authors, no matter which self-publishing service(s) they use. All that is required is an engaging story and your ebook file.

Getting Started

The submission process takes about 10 minutes.

(1) VIEW AND ACCEPT THE TERMS OF AGREEMENT

On this page, you will also be able to opt-in to make your ebook(s) available in your state's public libraries in addition to being considered for the Library Journal-curated SELF-e modules.

(2) PROVIDE GENERAL INFORMATION

Enter a few basic items of information, including your Name, Local Library, and Email Address.

(3) SUBMIT YOUR FILE

We currently accept ebooks in ePub 2 and ePub 3 formats, as well as PDF (authors can submit Print-on-Demand files if they are in PDF). We are currently only accepting ebooks published in English.

Non-US Submissions: If you do not live in the United States, please select “Outside the US” in the drop down menu. Non-US ebooks will be available to library patrons in a collection specifically for books not published in the United States.

(4) ENTER BASIC METADATA

We use this information to manage the curation process, manage the judging process and to help readers discover your ebook once it is available to patrons.

(5) FINISH

You are now finished with the submission process! If you would like to submit another book, simply start over and submit the next title using the same email address.

How is SELF-e different?

There are all kinds of self-publishing options. Why would you want to use SELF-e?

If you submit your books to SELF-e, you keep the rights. That means you can have them up with us, and on another, paying site as well. You'll have access to all of those library readers, and you can put a link to the site on which your book can be purchased by people who might not have come across it any other way.

FAQs

1. DO I EARN ROYALTIES FOR SALES?

Distribution via the SELF-e platform is royalty-free. SELF-e is a marketing and discovery service aimed at helping authors build an audience of readers.

2. WHAT DO YOU DO WITH MY EBOOK IF IT IS SELECTED FOR SELF-E?

You sign a non-exclusive license to make your book available to public library patrons via subscribing institutions in the public library market, including subscribing public libraries in your state. Authors are not restricted in any manner from promoting and selling their ebooks to any market they choose as a result of participating in SELF-e (including the public library market via other vendors).

The author will be given a digital badge to use to promote their inclusion to potential readers who may choose to purchase a copy of that title and/or other books by that author via retail channels.

3. WHAT IF MY BOOK ISN'T CHOSEN FOR INCLUSION IN LIBRARY JOURNAL'S SELF-E MODULES?

Even if your ebook is not selected for Library Journal's SELF-e modules, you can still opt to include it in a statewide module with other local authors. Library Journal will not curate these modules; rather, the platform provides libraries with an opportunity to highlight the creative output of their state's authors and to provide their respective communities access to ebooks by local authors.
