Get Started with OverDrive: OverDrive Streaming Video

A Beginning User's Guide to our Overdrive download service.

Streaming Videos

You can now stream videos for free through our OverDrive library. Videos check out for one week and are stored on your bookshelf just like your eBooks, audiobooks, and music. Access videos instantly on your mobile device from our ever-expanding catalog of digital feature films, documentaries, educational, children's, and other videos.

A few things to know about the service:

  • No early returns - videos check out for 1 week.
  • Videos are accessible on any devices that support a browser and a media player. In order to view videos on mobile devices, those devices must have browsers that support HTML5.
  • No download or special software required. Simply select a title and start watching right away!
  • If you're using the latest version of the OverDrive app for iOS or Android, tap the Add to app button to add the streaming video to your in-app bookshelf.

To get started, borrow an available video from your library. If you're using a web browser (like Chrome or Safari) or our Windows 8 app, click the Play button on your library bookshelf to start watching the video in a new browser tab. If you're using the latest version of the OverDrive app for iOS or Android, tap the Add to app button to add the streaming video to your in-app bookshelf.

Streaming video works on mobile devices and computers as long as you're using a browser with  HTML5 support (such as ChromeFirefoxSafari, or Internet Explorer).

Note: You may not be able to play all streaming videos (like those from Starz) on a Kindle Fire or Fire HD.

If you're not sure whether or not your device and browser are compatible, you can try the sample below to see if it works.

Some DRM-protected videos may require the OverDrive app for iOS or Android or Adobe Flash Player (on a computer).

Note: Streaming video may consume a lot of data, so if you're on a mobile plan with a data cap, we recommend using a Wi-Fi connection when streaming on your mobile device to avoid data overages.
