Descriptions of Crimes

There are three basic types of crime per the FBI:

  • Crime Against Person
  • Crime Against Property
  • Crime Against Society

These three types of crime are what law enforcement agencies across the country use for the National Incident-Based Reporting System.

Types of Crimes Against Persons include:

  • homicide
  • sex offenses (this includes rape and statutory rape)
  • kidnapping/abduction
  • assault
  • human trafficking

Types of Crimes Against Property include:

  • arson
  • burglary
  • robbery
  • larceny/theft
  • fraud (this includes illegal computer hacking and identity theft)
  • extortion/blackmail
  • bribery

Types of Crimes Against Society include:

  • animal cruelty
  • drug/narcotic offenses
  • gambling offenses
  • pornography/obscene material
  • weapon law violations

Also, some crimes have a different level of severity than others. For example, both animal cruelty and driving under the influence (or DUI) are Crimes Against Society, yet the former is considered a Group A (more severe) offense while the latter is considered a Group B (less severe) offense.
