Seed Libraries: Home

Everything you need to know about the new seed-sharing program at the East Baton Rouge Parish Library!

Purpose

The Seed Library is a FREE PROGRAM committed to increasing our community's ability to feed itself wholesome food by offering seeds and gardening education.

The Seed Library operates entirely through seeds donated by seed companies and library patrons.

We operate on the HONOR SYSTEM, meaning that we ask you only take what you plan to grow in a season so we can share our seeds with other library users in the community.

How it Works

Each participating library location should have a binder located near the seed library. This binder will have information on how the program works, as well as further information and handouts. When taking any seed, please sign in on the provided sheet in the binder, stating your name and what seeds you've taken.

Each library will provide you with empty envelopes to transport your seeds. Please remember to take only what you need.

Two or three seeds should guarantee you at least one plant.

Each provided envelope should have a label with space to fill out important growing information about the seeds. This information can be found on the seed's original packaging.

Tip: when writing down information, don't forget to include the TYPE of seed you are growing (ex. "Honey 'N Pearl Corn" instead of just "Corn").

Plant and grow your garden!

If you've got photos, we'd love to see them.

Save seeds from your harvest and return them to any participating library location.

Note: All donations will be vetted to ensure they are not invasive or harmful species.

Seed Donations

Returning seeds is NOT required, but is encouraged for easy to save seeds (lettuce, tomatoes, beans, peas, etc).

Returned seeds will allow us to keep the library well stocked for future users.

We encourage all users to learn basic seed saving techniques which can be found under the "Planting Guides" tab.
