CHRONICLING AMERICA: Historic American Newspapers

Chronicling America is a Website providing access to information about historic newspapers and select digitized newspaper pages, and is produced by the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP). NDNP, a partnership between the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the Library of Congress (LC), is a long-term effort to develop an Internet-based, searchable database of U.S. newspapers with descriptive information and select digitization of historic pages. Supported by NEH, this rich digital resource will be developed and permanently maintained at the Library of Congress. An NEH award program will fund the contribution of content from, eventually, all U.S. states and territories.

More information on program guidelines, participation, and technical information can be found at http://www.neh.gov/projects/ndnp.html or http://www.loc.gov/ndnp/.

GOOGLE search: Historical Magazines

While the search engine Google has many books indexed, it also has many older magazines such as Jet, Life, New York Magazine, Spy, Vibe and many others, indexed with pictures!

Magazines are integrated with book results, so each time you perform search on Google Books, you'll be searching across our entire corpus of books and magazines. You can limit your results just to magazines by using the Advanced Google Books feature and selecting the "Magazines" button. Any magazine results will be displayed with a "Magazine" tag right under the title.

Make sure to check Magazines under Content when running a search.

GOOGLE search: Historical Newspapers

Google also has hundred of historical and recent newspapers available from all over the world. These are of varying dates and ranges, but many go back to the 1800s and are international in scope. Unfortunately, virtually none are indexed.

However, you can search these papers this way:

If you know the newspaper or date of the event you can browse the newspaper issues by date and manually look for a specific date or event.
