The River Center Branch (RCB) Library MAKERSPACE has Open Time/Hours of Innovation each week!

Take a 3D tour of the Makerspace HERE, or come in for a tour in person! Attend one of our equipment badging classes, participate in a Pop-in-Program, or just to try your hand at tinkering! To use the Makerspace independently and outside of Open Time Hours of Innovation, patrons must complete the full badging process and then reserve the station equipment or software online. Open Time/Hours of Innovation operate on a First-come-First-served basis.

Baton Rouge Maker Faire

SAVE THE DATE! 10.19.2024

The Baton Rouge Mini Maker Faire is a community festival that brings together science, art, craft, homesteading, and makers of all kinds. This family-friendly event showcases the amazing work of all kinds of makers across the Baton Rouge area and beyond—anyone who is embracing the DIY or DIT (do-it-together!) spirit and wants to share their accomplishments with an appreciative audience. Entries can be submitted from individualsgroups such as hobbyist clubs and schools; commercial makers or crafters; startups; and companies.

Interested in getting badged? Check out our badging classes, manuals, and quizzes HERE! To fully badge, patrons must complete a lab practical exercise, completing all the steps learned without assistance to successfully create a product. To learn, you can do some self study or join us for a badging class at the RCB Makerspace!

RCB Makerspace Badging Program Events

Beginner Cricut Badging Class

The beginner badging class covers the basics of creating in the Cricut Design Space software and operating the flagship Cricut Maker machine, available in our River Center Branch Makerspace! You will learn about the various materials and tools available to you when you come into the Makerspace, as well as how to purchase additional materials, or get personal materials approved in advance for use on our equipment. 

For the badging class, participants will be provided a 4" x 4" cut of sticker vinyl for use in their prototype design (selection from available color options). Scrap materials are also available to patrons for free. Additional vinyl (materials) can be purchased at cost @rcbmakerspace. See our Makerspace Consumables list here. Note: this class does not earn you the Cricut Badge you must still pass the Cricut practical.

Beginner Heat Press Badging Class

Never have the right shirt to wear? Something missing from your favorite tote, backpack, or purse? Want to personalize your pillows? Or maybe, you just want your designs to shine and to speak through your favorite t-shirts! Then come in to learn how to use the Heat Press in the River Center Branch Makerspace!

In this class, you will learn how to use the heat press and practice using heat transfer vinyl and various fabrics on different heat press settings to compare results for your own designs later! This class DOES NOT cover how to use the Cricut Maker to design and cut your vinyl to press. Therefore, if you have not yet taken a Cricut Maker badging class, we recommend taking the one just prior to this class (see the events calendar)

Note: this class does not earn you the Heat Press Badge you must still pass the Heat Press practical.

Beginner Laser Cutter Badging Class

For this beginner class, you will search for a unique file to make with our Lulzbot Taz Workhorse 3D Printer! Patrons will learn the basics of 3D printing and design software, including how to download, modify, and upload files to print, about GCode, appropriate print settings, and how to pay for prints ($0.05/ gram).  Check out our infoguide page to learn more about the Makerspace equipment and badging options!

Note: this class does not earn you the 3D Printing Badge you must still pass the 3D Printing practical.

Beginner Audio Badging Class

Are you interested in learning about the recording studio at the River Center Branch Library? Then, now’s your chance! Join us for our Audio Badging Class in the studio! This badging class will go over the sound board, microphones, sound editing software, and the recording studio itself, so that you can earn your badge allowing you to use the space. To complete the badging process, patrons must complete a badging practical - completing all set up steps without assistance. Beginner Sewing Badging Class

Take this class to learn the basics of safe sewing machine operation on our Brother HC1850. Completion of the class and a lab practical earns you a badge that will allow you to schedule time to use the machine whenever it is available! Learn more about the badging practice here

This is a two-on-one class, so be sure to register to reserve your spot.

Note: this class does not earn you the Sewing Badge you must still pass the Sewing practical.
